Getting to Raiatea from Bora Bora

by Sue
(California)

Hi, We are taking a catamaran trip out of Raitea in July. We are hoping to spend a couple of nights in Bora Bora before boarding the Catamaran. The catamaran looks like it takes off at 12 noon and when I search flights from Bora Bora to Raitea, it looks like the earliest one doesn't get to Raitea until after 12pm? Is there another way to get to Raitea? We really do not want to use up one of our nights spending the night in Raitea...

Thanks for any help,
Sue

Bora Bora Island Guide's Response:

Hi Sue,
Are you looking at flight schedules from the Air Tahiti website? Looking at the schedule in July from Bora Bora to Raitea, the flight times vary very greatly depending on which day of the week you are travelling. Have a look at the schedule for your date here:
https://www.airtahiti.com/forecast-flight-schedule

July is peak season in Bora Bora, so there are a lot of flights in and out of the island at that time of year. Another option would be to fly from Bora Bora back to Papeete and then out to Raiatea as there will be more flights to choose from between Bora Bora and Papeete, but the extra time and expense that this will take, may make the option of staying overnight in Raiatea the better option.
You may be able to get a late afternoon/early evening flight out of Bora Bora to Raiatea, so that you are maximizing your time in Bora Bora before you leave to Raiatea.
The other thing to consider is that flight schedules can change, weather can be bad and Air Tahiti flights can end up being delayed, so it would be safer to arrive into Raiatea the day before the departure of your Catermaran to ensure that you don't miss it! You don't want to live expression that "the boat has sailed!"
The time it takes to get to the airport in Bora Bora (because it is on a small motu) and check in before your flight means that you need to leave for the airport with plenty of time. So depending on which part of the island you are staying, it can take half a day just getting there.

An alternative option for you would be to spend your 2 nights on Tahaa at the beautiful resort there. Tahaa is an island right next to Raiatea - you fly to Raiatea and then take a short shuttle boat to Tahaa to get there. The resort is beautiful and has views to Bora Bora. The lagoon next to the resort has the most colorful snorkeling we have experienced in Tahiti. This would be a magnificent way to spend your extra 2 nights, without spending too much time traveling or having unnecessary stress.
